Broad Application Prospects Of Biomedical Textiles

In December 8th, sponsored by Donghua University, the opening ceremony of the 2008 International Conference on fibrous tissue engineering scaffolds and the third meeting of the 111 annual plan was held in Donghua University.

The forum aims to promote cooperation and exchanges in textile, biological and pharmaceutical sciences. Experts and scholars from 20 universities and research institutes in 7 countries and regions attended the forum.

It is learnt that the overall goal of the "111 plan" is to aim at the frontiers of international disciplines, focus on the national goals, combine the disciplines with international level or national priority development, and take the national key disciplines as the foundation, and take the national, provincial and ministerial level key research bases as the platform, and introduce and gather more than 1000 overseas academic masters and academic elites from the top ranks of the top 100 universities and research institutes in the world, equipped with a number of outstanding domestic research backbone, forming a high level research team, and building 100 world-class disciplines innovation intelligence base.

In recent years, the Key Laboratory of textile and textile technology of Donghua University has actively encouraged international academic exchanges. It has launched 2006 International Academic Forum of doctoral students in textile science and engineering, 2007 International Forum on textile biomedical materials and international vascular clinical materials in 2008. These activities have provided a good international academic exchange platform for teachers and students in Donghua and domestic and foreign counterparts.

At the forum, 13 famous professors and scholars at home and abroad made an academic report on the theme of "fibrous tissue engineering scaffolds".

Professor IKADA of Nara Medical College in Japan has made an academic report on the application of biomedical textiles in tissue engineering; Professor Cao Yilin of Shanghai Jiao Tong University has brought a brilliant academic report entitled "tissue engineering scaffold"; Professor Xi Tingfei of Peking University has made an academic report entitled "cytotoxic research of bacterial cellulose and its nano scale scaffolds"; Professor Seeram of Singapore University, Professor Walpoth of Switzerland, Prof. Morsi of Australia, and Bowlin of Virginia Commonwealth University, have also made keynote speeches in the light of their respective research directions.

Experts at the conference agreed that fiber based tissue regeneration scaffolds have a wide range of research significance and application prospects, and are increasingly favored by governments and investment institutions. Donghua University, as an advantage school in textile disciplines, can vigorously support the research of fiber based tissue engineering scaffolds in order to achieve strategic pformation from traditional disciplines to modern disciplines, occupy a place in the forefront of Science in the world, and maintain the leading edge of Donghua University in the field of fiber based materials research.
